National Museum of Wales/Howard Hodgkin

In March 2011, the Fund awarded the National Museum of Wales a grant of £9,000, which, combined with a matching sum from the Derek Williams Trust, enabled the Museum to acquire the original print entitled Venice, Evening (1995), by Howard Hodgkin.

This is a large work (paper size 160cm x 195.5cm), 16 part hand-painted etching and aquatint print. It is described by the Curator of Prints and Drawings as 'a spectacular gallery piece' which will complement and enhance other Venetian works in the Museum's collection, by artists such as Canaletto, Guardi, Monet, Whistler, Sickert, Brangwyn and Piper.

'Internationally recognized as one of Britain's most important painters and printmakers and one of the most inventive and original colourists, Howard Hodgkin… represented Britain in the Venice Biennale and in 1985 he won the Turner Prize. His work has been the subject of numerous major exhibitions most notably at the Metropolitan Museum, New York in 1995, the Tate Gallery, London, 2006 and recently at Moma, Oxford in 2010. His paintings and prints are held by most major museums' (National Museum of Wales press release, 18 March, 2011).

It seems particularly apt that the Fund should contribute to the acquisition of this work, given its subject matter and the period when it was created. Nerys herself spent several months in Venice, in the mid-nineties, painting its townscapes at different times of day, including the work, 'Evening View' (1996).
